Bat houses are for the most part consructed nicely, and if a bat knew it was there would surely bring his whole colony to move in. But I see so many un ocupied bat houses, that I dont have alot of faith in putting them up. Ok, Now that that is all over, lets talk about bats and bat houses! Having bats in a bat house near your own home is a riskey move! When a maternal colony of bats outgrows there own home, they may look for someplace roomier, like your attic! Make sure the home is well sealed before attempting to get bats calling your yard home.
Why would a bat want to go into a funny shaped box, just because it was built for them? It may acomandate there needs for shelter but the fact is that they dont know its there. Lets find out why.
A bat gets into the attic of a home because of the differant smelling air coming out from cracks and voids left in the structure of the building. Bats have predators trying to eat them, like cats, owls, snakes. They live a long time, 20-30 years is pretty normal, and with age comes wisdom(unless you ask my teenage son) A bat wont put themselves in a dangerous place. So it must be high up. 15-20 ft. And the post should be solid. A wobbely weak post will whip in the wind, and the bats wont like that.

And what I am about to write is kinda gross, but it works. You need to get some bat guano and mix it with glyserine. You need to make a paste out of it and rub the wood down with it so it stinks. This is how animals find each other in there world, and you just sent the message out to the entire bat world! Good luck with installing your bat house!
